Alexa was born and raised in Los Angeles, California by her mother, who worked as a make-up artist after immigrating from Mexico with her as an infant. Alexa lived across the street from a meth lab, next door to meth addicts, and around the corner from the Black Eyed Peas recording studio. She was part of a toxic home environment involving constant fighting and ran away as a teenager but has described her family as very supportive.

Alexa said, “I didn’t grow up with the best male figures in my life. I actually didn’t grow up with much respect for men… that’s something that was built throughout time and just meeting new people… Being vulnerable and allowing that was really something that was very difficult for me…” Alexa was influenced by her mother, a former MAC makeup artist who instilled a love of beauty which she infused into her character Maddy.

Alexa describes herself as “quite a loner” who was bullied by classmates from elementary to high school. While in high school, she participated in performing arts and created a line of bedazzled sunglasses called Mainframe that sold on Melrose Avenue. Mainframe garnered popularity overseas, appearing in Vogue Korea, and being worn by celebrities including G-Dragon, Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, and Amber Rose. Alexa also wrote songs and designed a costume for Nicki Minaj’s first music videos.

Alexa also created Fairy Tales, an erotic folklore of short stories wherein Alexa portrays various mythical creatures, in collaboration with Petra Collins in 2021. The tales’ settings each range from suburban homes and parking lots, to unique spaces, and fantastical sites. Fairy Tales was published by Rizzoli in November 2021.

Alexa guest starred on the television series Ray Donovan as Shairee, and appeared in Love as Marina, and the drama series The OA as Ingrid. She also appeared on the daytime talk show A Little Late With Lilly Singh, along with Euphoria co-star Barbie Ferreira, to discuss the show and more. For her performance as Maddy on the HBO teen drama television series Euphoria, Alexa was deemed the breakout star by critics, receiving attention and acclaim.

In 2019, Alexa auditioned for Euphoria, despite deciding to take a break from acting to pursue music, because she was impressed by the series’ script. Alexa plays Maddy on Euphoria, a popular teenager lacking goals or motivation to accomplish anything besides being Nate’s girlfriend and becoming a gold digger. On Euphoria, Alexa says, “We show drugs, we show sex, we show violence… but we really don’t glorify it. We show a lot of the consequences.”

Alexa launched a collection with MAC Cosmetics and stars in its campaign called More Than Meets the Eye, promoting the collection’s 36 revamped MAC eyeshadows. The collection also includes two new products, Dazzleshadow Extreme shadows and the EyeBrows Big Boost Fibre Gel. Alexa is featured in the campaign wearing bold metallic blue eyeshadow, extra-black eyeliner, and faux lashes. The look is inspired by Euphoria, and she also did a makeup tutorial on YouTube for MAC.

As of November 2021, Alexa has been working on releasing her first EP, and continues working in the development and production of film and TV.
