Euphoria’s Alexa Demie Responds To Madonna Movie Cast Rumors

Euphoria actress Alexa Demie responds to rumors that she is in the running to play Madonna in the upcoming biopic about the famed singer.

Euphoria actress Alex Demie comments on her potential role in the Madonna biopic. Demie stars as Maddy Perez in HBO Max’s Euphoria, a strong-headed, manipulative and cunning girl who adds to the addictive melodrama of the hit show. The actress has starred in a number of feature projects, including Brigsby Bear, Mid 90s, and Waves, as well as the Netflix shows The Oa and Love. Euphoria has been her breakout role, however, as Maddy is one of the key players in the show and has won viewers over in a love/hate relationship.

Madonna is the multi-Grammy award-winning singer and actress who has been a staple of the music industry since she exploded onto the scene in the 80s. Since that time, Madonna has become a household name and numerous attempts have been made to turn her life story into a feature film throughout the years. In an effort to tell her story herself, Madonna is currently set to direct her own biopic and has been holding intense auditions for actresses in an effort to find someone that can embody the megastar in the film. Thus far, names circulating to play Madonna include Florence Pugh, Julia Garner, Odessa Young, Emma Laird, as well as both Euphoria stars Sydney Sweeney and Demie.

During the FYC Emmy event for Euphoria at the Academy Museum, Variety asked Demie about her potential involvement in the Madonna biopic with the actress coyly responding, “What about Madonna?” with a smile on her face, saying “I don’t know” when pressed on whether she went to the “boot camp” that Madonna has had all prospective actresses go through, which includes choreography, readings, and singing auditions. Demie did say that she has met the singer, saying, “Yes, I’ve met Madonna, she’s an icon.” Demie ultimately played it close to the chest in terms of any details about her potential for the part or how involved she may or may not be in the audition process.

Madonna herself has appeared in a multitude of films throughout her career, starting around the same time as her singing career took off. Some of her early notables are the cult hits Desperately Seeking Susan and Who’s That Girl, before appearing in the comic-strip adaptation of Dick Tracy with then-boyfriend Warren Beatty. The singer followed that up with one of her most prominent roles, that of Mae Mordabito in Penny Marshall’s A League of Their Own, which is soon to be a series on Prime Video. Her last notable big-screen performance came in the form of Alan Parker’s Evita, which won Best Original Song at the 1997 Oscars.

Madonna has actually directed features before (2008’s Filth and Wisdom and 2011’s W.E.), so it’s not surprising for her to be taking the reigns on her own life story. Of course, the question of bias will come up, but Madonna has made a career of being outspoken and controversial, so it’s unlikely she’ll try to sugarcoat her own biopic. If anything, having the singer/actress at the helm will help shape it into something representative of who she was in those early decades (as it’s said to lead up to her Blonde Ambition tour in the 90s), and who better to shed some light on that than the person who lived it? Whether or not Euphoria’s Demie is the right actress for the job will be up to Madonna, but whoever she chooses, it will no doubt be someone she has heavily vetted to embody her.
