Katy Perry on loving her body: ‘I’m curvy, I’m not sample-size’

When it comes to her body, Katy Perry is unafraid to talk about it.

“I’m curvy, I’m not sample-sized,” she told Mashable on a recent Sunday afternoon. The day before the Met Gala, Perry met us at The Waterfall Mansion in New York’s Upper East Side, where she was modeling her new makeup collaboration with Cover Girl cosmetics.

The line of makeup includes various shades of pink lipstick, as well as one in black, a color Perry eventually wore to Monday’s Met Gala.

We sat in a private room and talked about body positivity and the pressures of being a woman in Hollywood. More specifically, we were conversing about the terms “plus-size,” and “curvy,” adjectives that have come into contention lately, thanks to celebs like Amy Schumer, who’s since distanced herself from the very term.

“This cup doesn’t fit in and my boobs are down to here,” Perry said, with her revealing blue blouse accessorized by a faux fur shawl. “I’m not trying to cover them, either.”

The singer, who made a splash on Monday’s Met Gala red carpet when she wore a dark Prada gown with a beehive hairstyle that kissed the night’s sky, said she hopes the body-positivity conversation keeps growing.

But she doesn’t think every woman needs to own the word “curvy” or “plus-sized,” either.

“I think owning the terms is on an individual basis. It’s about what you want to call yourself. We don’t see ourselves in the same way. I know for me, I’m curvy, I’m not sample size, but I represent a lot of people out there. I want to be relatable. That’s really important to me, while not losing my mind in this weird fucking human experiment I’m going through.”

The outspoken star, who isn’t afraid of taking style risks as proven through the Tamagotchi she used to accessorize her belt at the Met Gala, is also equally as bold on social media.

No wonder then, that @katyperry is still ranked as the most followed Twitter account in the world, with more than 88 million followers. Coming in second at 80 million is Justin Bieber.

Though still an avid tweeter, Perry admitted she was taking a small break.

“I’m still [the HBIC] of Twitter,” she said. “I’m not trying to feed the meter so much these days. I did that for so long.”

One reason: She’s been working on her latest record.

“I think when I come back and have more to say and want to tell certain stories, I want to be all out. I think it’s time to take a break, there’s a thing called being super overexposed.

“You want people to miss you.”
