Olivia Rodrigo delivers a forceful speech on the right to abort

The entertainment industry has always raised its voice in favor of different social causes and of course the right to legal and safe abortion is no exception.

Olivia Rodrigo is the latest artist to speak out against the US Supreme Court’s potential decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, who legalized abortion in 1973, and who would now allow each state to more strictly regulate or even ban the procedure.

And no, the singer wasn’t at a reproductive rights rally, she was onstage in the middle of her own concert in Washington DC, which is part of her “Sour Tour,” when she paused to address the situation via a strong speech.

“I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to speak about how heartbroken I am about the Supreme Court’s possible decision to overturn Roe v. Wade,” Rodrigo, 19, said, drawing applause from his fans.

“Our bodies should never be in the hands of politicians”

If the court goes ahead with this decision, Americans will no longer be able to trust abortion as a federally protected right.

The threat to abortion rights in the country was leaked in a “draft opinion,” written by conservative Justice Samuel Alito, which stated that the Supreme Court “has voted to strike down the landmark Roe vs. Wade”, according to different reports.

Its publication has dismayed those who support the right to abortion, while detractors celebrate the possibility that a ruling on that line will be confirmed next July.

“I hope that we can raise our voices to protect our right to have a safe abortion, which is a right that many people before us have worked so hard to obtain,” concluded Olivia in her presentation on May 4.

Roe vs. Wade is the name of the lawsuit that led to the landmark Supreme Court ruling in 1973 that established the constitutional right to abortion in the United States. The majority decision found an absolute right to abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy.

It is the most discussed legal precedent in the modern history of our country and its elimination would change the rule of law for millions of women.
