‘I had no alcohol for three months – it was devastating’: Katy Perry reveals teetotal detox helped her through ‘dark place’ for her album

Pop star Katy Perry has revealed she completed a three-month teetotal detox as part of her recovery from a difficult emotional period.

The singer who publicly split from ex-husband Russell Brand in 2011, made the confession on Channel 4’s Alan Carr: Chatty Man on Thursday.

The pre-recorded interview, which will be broadcast on Friday, saw Perry open up about her low points over the past two years.

Speaking to Carr, Perry said: ‘Yeah it’s fun to laugh at it now, it wasn’t fun to laugh at it then. You know, I was going through a period where a lot of negative thoughts were entering my mind, obviously they did not succeed, but I had my confidence kind of beaten down.

‘It’s a record of me going inside, and a lot of self reflection and figuring out like, where can I make areas of myself better, or what responsibility can I take?

‘Rather than pointing the finger and saying ‘you’re the problem’ or ‘you’re the reason for all my problems’ or ‘you’re awful; my life is awful’, I go ‘okay, how can I fix this?’ So yeah, it was not fun.’

Host Carr then asked: ‘What do you do to pick yourself up? Because for me it’s a box of wine and a Golden Girls box set,’ causing the audience to laugh.

She replied: ‘I do a couple of the hot toddies and a box set of Ab Fab […] I love a bit of Patsy. You know I did a lot of different things, I surrounded myself with my good friends, I did this whole cleanse where I didn’t have any of the alcohol for 3 months – that was devastating – I did vitamins and supplements, and hikes and meditation and prayer.

‘But I think at the end of it all, as much as the things I did, I think there was something cosmically happening that was looking out for me in some ways, but I was putting my best positive foot forward.’

The show also featured an interview with Strictly Come Dancing host Bruce Forsyth.

Speaking about his future on the hit BBC show, he said: ‘When you get to my age you know […] and you realise how lucky you’ve been, we’re all on borrowed time.

‘I just was trying to say I’m so lucky to have done all these things, still be able to work. It wasn’t a question of retiring […] so much has happened to me and it’s been so wonderful that okay, it may all finish tomorrow, but if it finishes tomorrow I’ve had a wonderful time, and I’m very grateful – that’s all I meant.’
