Madison Beer Shows ‘Em How It’s Done

The pop star on her new single, personal growth, and the mutual relationship she has with her fans…
There have been times in Madison Beer’s career – which began in 2012 – where she has not felt fully heard by those she was working with in the music industry and, as a result of working to implement changes (which include being credited for her contributions to music videos, for example), she is now in her element and is calling all the shots. Her new single ‘Showed Me (How I Fell In Love With You)’ is just one example of how Madison is in control of her creativity and her future.

When we speak to her, via Zoom, about her new single ‘Showed Me (How I Fell In Love With You),’ Madison Beer is in LA, where she resides. Premiered on BBC Radio 1 yesterday, this latest single is Madison’s take on the 1968 track ‘Showed Me’ by The Turtles. ‘Showed Me (How I Fell In Love With You)’ is soaked in rich, hypnotic Old Hollywood vibes while Madison’s flawless vocals bring a modern touch to the song. The provocative music video sees Madison appear as a glamorous femme fatale, which suggests a sense of added sophistication when it comes to the 23-year-old’s latest releases. Bringing more depth to her music is something Madison has spoken about when asked about previous releases too.

This maturity means bolder choices in terms of single selections too as some artists may shy away from covering such a well-known song, but for the pop heroine, it’s part of the appeal.“ [‘Showed Me (How I Fell In Love With You)’] is a Turtles interpolation. I’m really excited to honour them in that way. That’s like the most exciting part of it, for sure. Writing and making the video for ‘Showed Me’ was a really unique experience.”

“This song samples The Turtles ‘You Showed Me.’ I’ve never used sampling or interpolation on a song before, but I’m always looking for new ways to experiment in the studio and pay homage to the classic sounds and melodies I loved growing up. This song is the perfect culmination of those things.” She felt a connection with the lyrics of the song and wanted to work on making a classic song her own. “I think I liked [that] it wasn’t super obvious what it was about. I think anyone who takes it and makes it whatever they think it’s about, so I think that’s really interesting.”

As fans eagerly wait for the release of the music video on Youtube, they comment on her growth as an artist – something which Madison has strived for throughout her career. One even writes “This song solidifies the start of a new era. So excited for more music and so proud of Madison for her growth!” in the comments under the video hours before the video is released. It’s this dedication which Madison is touched by. She describes her relationship with her fans as “beautiful,” before adding, “I love my fans so much. They’re so incredible to me. And we have such a beautiful relationship. And I feel really, really lucky and honoured to have the relationship that we do.”

‘Dangerous’ was Madison’s first new release of 2022 and also felt very much inspired by the A-list lifestyle. On the track, Madison’s skills as a songwriter shone. Her previous single was the first taste of something more vulnerable, personal and mature and a sign of things to come. This vulnerability can be sensed in ‘Showed Me (How I Fell In Love With You)’ too. However, Madison feels ‘Dangerous’ and ‘Showed Me (How I Fell In Love With You)’ convey different emotions. “I don’t think ‘Showed Me (How I Fell In Love With You)’ has a similar energy [to] ‘Dangerous’, but it has a similar energy to everything else that’s on that album, which is really exciting.”

Following on from her debut ‘Life Support’ from 2021, there is talk of a new album on the way but it’s something Madison is keeping close to her chest while she is still working on it. In the mean time, there are new (excellent!) singles being shared, which is very exciting. She does reveal what she thinks of her future offering. “It’s a really, really good album, if I could say so. And I’m really proud of it and excited for people to hear.”

With a new single out today and a new album on the horizon, Madison appears to be well and truly in the midst of a new era of her career. This means she feels connected to her new material like never before. “[This new era] is very important. It feels the most to me.” She continued, ”I feel so excited and ready to get it out. It’s just so, so exciting. And I feel like the music is so… it just speaks to me in such a deep way. And I hope that it speaks to others in the same way.”

Madison performed at Reading Festival, her first UK show since the pandemic, in August. “Reading was amazing and so, so sick. It was such an awesome experience. So I had such a good time.” Will we see her performing in the UK again any time soon?

She says, “As of right now? No. But when the new stuff comes out, you betcha! I’m gonna be over there a lot.” We can’t wait to hear more from an artist who is not only growing but taking risks and showing her best hand.
