Euphoria’s Maude Apatow Shares Sweet Sentiments About On-Screen Sister Sydney Sweeney

Maude Apatow has officially declared 2022 as the year of Sydney Sweeney, and we can’t help but agree.

This year alone, the 24-year-old actress has been nominated for two Primetime Emmys for her roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus, and scored a (still-unknown) role in Sony’s upcoming Madame Web.

Now, Sweeney has been identified as a member of the TIME100 Next 2022, a list of “emerging leaders from around the world” who shape the future and define the next generation of leadership.

In honor of her nomination to the list, Euphoria co-star and Sweeney’s on-screen sister Maude Apatow shared sweet sentiments about the actress with TIME.

“2022 is the year of Sydney Sweeney and I’ve had a front-row seat,” Apatow began, recounting one of the more memorable scenes in the show’s second season.

“I play Sydney’s sister Lexi on Euphoria and have gotten to watch her acting up close, literally two inches away from her face. In one of her many memorable moments from this season, Sydney’s character Cassie is in a hot tub watching her best friend Maddy having a passionate fight with her boyfriend Nate, who is having an affair with Cassie. Stressed-out from guilt, jealousy, horniness, rage, and from being hammered, Cassie finally throws up in the middle of the hot tub.”

Apatow says that Sweeney is the only one who would be able to pull off the delightfully disgusting hot tub scene in what she calls a “fierce, comic ballet.”

“Sydney juggles all of those emotions in a fierce, comic ballet that only she could pull off. I’ve never met anyone who works harder or who is more inventive,” she writes. “One moment she will make you cry tears of laughter and the next she will break your heart. Sydney is an unstoppable force. She created a completely different character on the remarkable series The White Lotus and was nominated for the Emmy for both performances.”

And although Apatow and Sweeney’s characters on Euphoria have a tenuous relationship at best (in the way sisters do), Apatow has nothing but love and awe for her co-star.

“In addition to her acting work she can produce a movie, fix a car, fight you MMA-style, and dazzle on the red carpet all in the same day,” she gushes. “I am so excited to see what my friend will do next. Whatever it is, I will be watching no matter where my seats are.”

Euphoria is now streaming on HBO Max.
