Former Disney stars Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato proved they were all grown up now Wednesday night at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand in front of a crowd of 10,244.

Jonas, 23, had the young girls in the audience (and their moms) swooning with a sexed-up performance overflowing with come-hither innuendo and smoldering glances. Lovato, 24, took things to the next level with a provocative outfit that must have been hot glued into place to carefully, but barely, conceal her nether regions.

The pair are longtime friends, with Lovato spending the early days of her career on the road opening for his boy band, the Jonas Brothers. Wednesday, though, Lovato was the clear headliner with a bigger, bolder production. The pair shared the same backing musicians and each played 50-minute sets, with Jonas up first.

Many reviews from the tour have been rough on Jonas, accusing him of lacking energy and charisma. But at the Grandstand, he offered an engaging trip through his two most recent solo albums, which offer soulful, sexy pop somewhat similar to “Faith”-era George Michael.

Then again, maybe he was just happy to have his other old band back together. In 2010, when he was just 17, Jonas released an album of R&B-influenced pop music with the Administration, a group consisting mostly of former members of Prince’s New Power Generation. The collaboration only lasted a few years, but Jonas ended up playing a surprise, one-off reunion show with the Administration late Wednesday night at Minneapolis’ Fine Line Music Cafe, after he wrapped things up at the State Fair.

When he announced that show to the audience, Jonas strapped on a guitar for the Administration song “Who I Am,” a highlight in a set full of them, from his goofy current single “Bacon” to his triumphant smash “Jealous.”

Although they have performed a song or two together at other tour stops, Jonas and Lovato didn’t share the stage at all Wednesday. With sparks literally raining down behind her, Lovato opened her set with a handful of high-energy bangers: “Confident,” “Heart Attack” and “Neon Lights.”

Lovato, who isn’t afraid to lecture, can be too much to handle in a full-length concert, but her 50-minute set proved to be the perfect amount of Demi, despite an overly long run of ballads. She kept her banter under control, too, but couldn’t pass up the opportunity to announce: “I truly believe when you have a voice that reaches so many people, you need to use it for good.” (Lovato’s heart is in the right place, but she struggles with tone.)

To wrap things up, Lovato tore through her hit “Cool for the Summer.” And just in case anyone missed that it’s about experimenting sexually with another woman, Lovato took the opportunity to seductively stroke the inner thigh of one of her backup singers.
