Demi Lovato is known for taking fashion risks and stepping out of the box with their outfits, and their latest look is the perfect example.
Demi appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on June 9 rocking a total optical illusion of a dress. From a distance, the green, gold, and black knee-length dress looked as though pops of skin peeked through the fabric, but if you look up close, Demi isn’t wearing a “naked dress” at all — it’s simply designed to look like a naked body.
The trompe l’oeil design is a signature of Sergio Castaño Peña of Syndical Chamber, the designer behind Demi’s illusionary dress. Many of Syndical Chamber’s dresses are crafted to make the wearer appear as though they’re draped in body-hugging layers and naked underneath. (You can custom order Demi’s exact dress on their site.)
Demi paired the dress with a shiny black croc print pleather jacket, black PVC peep-toe heels, and a handful of silver rings. For their beauty look, the star went for a dramatic smoky eye and neutral glossy lip and styled their hair in a messy curly mullet. It’s a look that suits Demi’s new rock vibe in both their music and their personal style. Earlier this summer, Demi paired platform Converse with a pleated miniskirt for a total pop-punk moment.
Sheer pieces are everywhere this year; the trend has exploded in the celeb and fashion world, with everyone from Kristen Stewart to Kylie Jenner giving it a try. Kylie, for example, opted for a fishnet catsuit for a recent Kylie Cosmetics photoshoot. She also went the trompe l’oeil route like Demi at the BBMAs, where she rocked a maxi dress from Balmain’s RTW Fall 2022 collection that also features a naked-like print.
The sheer, naked trend is a fun way to show a little skin in the summer, and in the case of Demi’s dress, it’s also a bit of a puzzle for your brain and eyes to unlock. Whatever form it takes, we love to see it.
