Katy Perry released her new video for “Chained to the Rhythm” on Tuesday, and while her pastel party vibes are still intact, the dark political undercurrent is very present (you might have seen it coming if you caught her “PERSIST” armband at the Grammys). In the video, Katy wanders through a theme park called Oblivia, designed to look like what people in the 1950s thought the future would look like. Unfortunately, few people in 2017 look as good as Katy does with pink hair and pastel turquoise eye shadow, but keep that dream alive, midcentury futurists.
In addition to the very Pleasantville moment when Katy pricks her finger on a rose, there’s a ride called “The Great American Dream Drop” and a roller coaster called “Love Me,” plus a giant hamster wheel for all the sheeple. In case all that isn’t enough to tip you off to the dystopian themes in play, watch out for the sign displaying a wait time of “1984.” Would it be terrible to eat that cotton candy though? Because it looks pretty good.
