ALEXA DEMIE HAS ALWAYS BEEN THAT GIRL

It’s been a sad couple of weeks for Euphoria fans, with season 2 of the cult-favourite show ending. Although it has been renewed for season 3, this isn’t set to hit our screens until 2024. A travesty, if you ask us. However, whilst the show deals with dark themes, complex characters and a sobering look at how teenage life can get out of hand all-too-quickly, most people associate the show with its industry-shifting, gem-heavy makeup looks, viral fashion moments, and, of course, Alexa Demie.

Alexa’s character Maddy Perez quickly became a fan-favourite, thanks to her never-ending Lewks, harsh tongue and main character energy. Providing many of Season One’s most celebrated moments (the whole carnival episode, for one), we generally saw a softer, post-Nate side to Maddy in season two, aside from her iconic aggy realisation scene. With a wardrobe that graduated from I.am.Gia to archival Miu Miu and Jacquemus, it seemed that Maddy is that girl – and somewhat unsurprisingly, Alexa Demie herself is no different. But how did she get here?

Well, it seems she has lived a thousand lives. A viral tweet pointed out that Demie has actually been around for years – popping up at various intersections of celebrity and pop-culture well before Euphoria. From being photographed with the Kardashians, pre-mega fame, to posing with reclusive pop star of the 2010s Sky Ferreira, it’s clear Demie has been running in Hollywood’s circles for some time. In the carefully-curated photoset, we also see her with both Grimes and Azealia Banks, two musicians turned feuders since the photo in question.

Demie has been everywhere – she seems to be a time-traveller as well as celebrity – with fans taking to the tweet like wildfire and hypothesising her appearance at various other global events including Jesus’ crucifixion, or perhaps at the fall of the Berlin wall.

However, Demie has straddled the worlds of fashion, art, cinema and music. Designing a fashion collection in high school, the fashion industry saw her spend time in Japan and develop a sunglasses collection that actually wasn’t half bad. A little later, Demie made her debut as a singer, releasing a single which gives us major early-Kali Uchis vibes, as well as undertaking a brief tour in 2016 – videos of which periodically circulate on social media. Then she began dabbling in acting, appearing in The OA and Ray Donovan, before landing a leading role in Mid90s – Jonah Hill’s directorial debut film. In 2018, she was cast in Euphoria, and from there, her career grew exponentially.

After Euphoria’s 2019 release, Demie was cast in Waves and Gia Coppolo’s movie Mainstream, where she starred alongside Andrew Garfield. Taking cinema to the next level, the creative is now apparently producing her first feature film, which will be based on the life of her mother Rosa Mendez. Demie is set to star as her mother in the film, playing the teenage version of her growing up in Hollywood during the 1980s.

As well as being a fashion it-girl (and hanging out with the rest of them, Hadids and all), Demie has also become somewhat of a fashion muse. Gracing the FROW at Balenciaga’s most recent presentation in Paris, and being spotted in a series of fits which momentarily broke the internet, it seems all of Demie’s past lives and career ventures have converged to make her an undeniable 21st Century star. She really is that girl.
