Billie Eilish: Sexual exploitation of young people goes on ‘everywhere’

The 19-year-old singer speaks about the meaning behind her newly released single Your Power, as she appears on the cover of Vogue.

Billie Eilish has said the sexual exploitation of young people goes on “everywhere” and that everyone she knows has had a “weird experience”.

The 19-year-old singer was talking about her new single – which speaks directly to someone who’s taken advantage of a younger girl.

Featuring lyrics such as “try not to abuse your power” and “you said you thought she was your age”, Eilish said it was not about one person specifically.

Appearing on the cover of British Vogue, she said Your Power was “an open letter to people who take advantage – mostly men”.

“It’s really not at all about one person,” she said.

“You might think, ‘It’s because she’s in the music industry’ – no, dude. It’s everywhere.

“I don’t know one girl or woman who hasn’t had a weird experience, or a really bad experience. And men, too – young boys are taken advantage of constantly.”

Eilish told Vogue that she had been in a similar situation when she was younger, but that it didn’t involve a music industry figure.

The singer is well known for wearing baggy clothes and has admitted having body dysmorphia issues in the past.

For the Vogue pictures, she chose a “classic old-timey pin-up” look and said on Instagram she loved the pictures.

She told the magazine that some people might criticise her for changing her look but that people should make their own rules.

“It’s all about what makes you feel good,” she told the magazine.

“If you want to get surgery, go get surgery. If you want to wear a dress that somebody thinks that you look too big wearing, **** it – if you feel like you look good, you look good.”

Eilish’s new album, Happier Than Ever, is out on 30 July.
