The artist has been embracing an edgier look as they celebrate their return to their rock music roots after announcing that they are leaving the pop genre.

Though Demi is primarily known for their pop music hits including Cool For The Summer and Heart Attack, the singer initially began their career in the rock genre with the release of their first two albums, Don’t Forget and Here We Go Again as well as the Camp Rock movie soundtrack.

In January, Demi revealed that they were going in a more ‘punk rock’ direction with their musical output.

The singer told fans on Instagram that they were holding a ‘funeral’ for their old style of music.

‘A funeral for my pop music,’ they wrote, surrounded by team members, some of them presumably musicians, and their manager Scooter Braun.

Last month, Lovato and Matthew Koma’s band Winnetka Bowling League released  the break-up ballad Fiimy, which is an acronym meaning, ‘F**k it, I miss you.’

In an interview with Rolling Stone in February, Demi shared their thoughts on leaving the pop genre behind.

‘I would say it’s a new era. I’m ever-evolving, ever-changing,’ they said.

‘I’d like to put the rest of my music behind me and start fresh in this new era for this next album — but I do that every album cycle.

They also clarified that they did not actually hold a funeral for their pop music.

‘It honestly wasn’t a funeral,’ they told Rolling Stone. ‘It was a label meeting and we just all happened to be in black and I was like, “Wow, this is like a funeral for my pop music.” There wasn’t an actual funeral.’

When asked if they were returning to their rocky early emo days, they replied, ‘That, but better. And also, there’s a bit of… and when I say heaviness, I don’t mean lyrically, but heaviness as in some of the sound that I haven’t done before, which is exciting. It’s a new era reminiscent of my first era.’

The performer stated, ‘I’m not changing with the new music. I’m just going back to my roots!’

The singer told Rolling Stone that the COVID-19 pandemic taught them how to be alone.

Demi’s last relationship ended in September 2020 when they broke off their engagement to soap opera actor Max Ehrich after seven months together.

They said, ‘I think that at the beginning of Covid, I wasn’t alone. A part of that situation was me not wanting to be alone and then I really came to terms with it.

‘Ever since I’ve been alone, I feel like I’ve learned more about myself. I’ve become more secure in the person that I am.

‘It was just time that I needed to spend by myself because I feel like my whole life — well not my whole life, but ever since I started dating — I was always talking to somebody, or hooking up with someone, or in a relationship, and these past two years have been truly transformative for me.’
