Demi Lovato Shares Unretouched Bikini Photo to Promote Cellulite Acceptance and Self-Love

Demi Lovato is ready to get real, and she proved it by posting an unedited bikini picture to her Instagram.

In a new post, Demi posed in her swimsuit by the pool and said in the caption that posting that kind of unedited pH๏τo is her “biggest fear.” Rather than continuing to apply pre-determined beauty standards to herself, though, Demi said she’s ready to start living on her own terms and appreciating her body as it is.

“This is my biggest fear. A pH๏τo of me in a bikini unedited. And guess what, it’s CELLULIT[E]!!!! I’m just literally sooooo tired of being ashamed of my body, editing it (yes the other ʙικιɴι pics were edited – and I hate that I did that but it’s the truth) so that others think I’m THEIR idea of what beautiful is, but it’s just not me,” Demi wrote. “This is what I got. I want this new chapter in my life to be about being authentic to who I am rather than trying to meet someone else’s standards. So here’s me, unashamed, unafraid and proud to own a body that has fought through so much.”

While many might look at Demi’s body and not see any of the supposed flaws she sees, that’s not the point. Everyone has their own ideas about their bodies, often heavily influenced by what society says is beautiful and not beautiful. Those standards can influence each of us, no matter how others think we look. So for Demi to work on coming to terms with something on her body that she’s previously been ashamed of is important. Having cellulite is not shameful, and no one should be made to feel like they have to hide any part of their body.

It’s also important that Demi opened up about editing previous pictures of herself. What we see on Instagram can feel like reality, and can make us wonder why our own bodies don’t like those we’re double tapping on social media. The more honest we are about how we really look, or altering that appearance, the easier it is to remember that what’s on social media isn’t always as it seems.

Demi went on to talk about how she’s happy to be free of restrictive eating and excessive workouts, while still being the public eye. She’s been open in the past about her experience with eating disorders, and said she gave up dieting and depriving herself of foods that she likes. Demi also made clear in her post that she’s not preaching a type of body positivty that she doesn’t really feel.

“Anyway, here’s me, RAW, REAL! And I love me. And you should love you too! Now back to the studio.. I’m working on an anthem.. 🙏🏼🙌🏼🤷🏻‍♀️” she wrote. “Also. Just so everyone’s clear.. I’m not stoked on my appearance BUT I am appreciative of it and sometimes that’s the best I can do. I hope to inspire someone to appreciate their body today too.”

The body positivity movement can sometimes make it feel like you have to love everything about your body at all times, and for many of us, that’s just not realistic. Like we said, societal pressures and warped ideas of how we look can make us dislike parts of our body or appearance, and sometimes that’s just part of the ride. Instead of focusing on those feelings, Demi is choosing to appreciate how her body is still moving forward and letting her do things like pose by the pool — and that’s OK. Her honesty is inspiring. Oh, and yes, she did mention that she’s working on what we’re sure will be another classic Demi Lovato anthem, and we’re ready for that to be inspiring too.
