During an August 2022 appearance on the “Spout Podcast,” the “Cool for the Summer” singer said she had “actually adopted the pronouns of she/her again” due to “recently … feeling more feminine.” The change came more than one year after Lovato said she preferred they/them pronouns

“Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all — I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward,” the “Dancing With the Devil” artist wrote via Instagram in May 2021. “This has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work. I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson.”

At the time, the musician said that the change came from learning more about herself.

“Since I’ve learned about gender idenтιтy more and learning about being nonbinary or gender nonconforming, I’ve used this time to really explore what feels right to me,” the ‘Skyscraper” singer explained during a June 2021 interview on Audacy Check In. “And after a year and a half of exploration, I realized it was time to let the world know that it feels weird to me when I get called a ‘she’ or a ‘her.’ I understand that people might have a hard time adjusting to it because it is something new, but I want to encourage people to keep trying and that I understand that it’s a process to get used to.”

“I used to identify family as blood-related, and now my queer family has become more family than friends,” Lovato explained on Audacy Check In. “And I feel like I now have two families. I have my blood relatives and then I have my queer family, and that family to me is the chosen family.”

The Sonny With a Chance alum was briefly engaged to soap opera actor Max Ehrich in 2020. The following year, she told Teen Vogue that their breakup was a blessing in disguise.

“When I started getting older, I started realizing how queer I really am. This past year I was engaged to a man, and when it didn’t work, I was like, ‘This is a huge sign,’” she told the outlet in 2021. “I thought I was going to spend my life with someone. Now that I wasn’t going to, I felt this sense of relief that I could live my truth.”

Coming Out
When announcing a change to they/them pronouns, Lovato wanted to help others who identify outside the gender binary. She has since announced that she has “adopted the pronouns of she/her again.”

The New Mexico native reflected on how her upbringing affected her relationship with gender idenтιтy.

“Growing up in Dallas, Texas, in the South, being Christian, there were a lot of norms that were already pushed on to me when it came to Sєxuality and gender,” Lovato told Jane Fonda during an interview for Fire Drill Friday in June 2021. “And I’m a very fluid person, I’m a very free spirited, open person.”

The singer added, “So, there’s been moments in my life that have been very confusing to me, you know being 10 years old, attracted to women and not knowing what that meant as a Christian and being raised in the South where that’s not very open. You know, it’s harder there.”
