Halle Bailey admits seeing Black girl reactions to her as The Little Mermaid ‘tore me up’

Halle Bailey revealed she was extremely emotional watching the reactions of Black girls to her take on The Little Mermaid.

The 22-year-old rising star played the lead role of Ariel in the live action remake of the popular Disney animation that tells the story of the mermaid princess who lives under the sea.

Reflecting on the public response to the first look trailer for the film that showed Halle in costume, the actress admitted she was ‘shocked’.

She said: ‘Seeing the world’s reaction to it was definitely a shock, but seeing all the babies’ reactions, all the brown and Black young girls, really tore me up emotionally.

‘It’s honestly been such a crazy ride, and I genuinely feel shocked and honored and grateful to be in this position. A lot of times, I have to pinch myself and be like, is this real life?’.

In the same chat with Edition, she revealed details about the harsh filming schedule she endured to bring the iconic character to life.

Halle shot scenes for almost a year at Pinewood Studios in London and said that some days she wouldn’t get out of the water for 13 hours.

She also explained she would have to spend hours on end attached to a harness and explained: ‘I pushed myself as far as I’ve ever pushed myself in life and I feel like the message from her was to know that you’ve always had it in you’.

Her thoughts on the reaction to her part came after she admitted seeing a Barbie dolled styled on her character brought her to tears.
