It was a frigid day on a hotel rooftop near Times Square, and everyone was waiting for Lindsay Lohan. If that feels like an observation from 2006, it’s because it was certainly true then.

Lohan was once notorious for exhibiting behavior that inconvenienced people: being late to set, being unable to perform once she arrived. There was that time that she received not one but two DUIs in the summer of 2007. But in 2019, 20 years after she debuted in The Parent Trap, and six years after her last arrest, she was not late; she was merely about to make an entrance.

The party was for Lohan’s new reality show, Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club, which premieres tonight on MTV, and the club had been done up to resemble as close to an island hot spot as a midtown hotel in January could manage. The signature cocktail on offer, Beach Bubbles, contained berry-flavored vodka and prosecco; palapa-style umbrellas had been erected to recall those that dot the shoreline at Lohan Beach House in Mykonos, Greece.

In the show, Lohan and her business partner, Panos Spentzos, pluck nine buffed and bronzed American “ambassadors” from nightlife jobs around the country to work at Lohan Beach House as VIP hosts, amping up customers and encouraging them to spend more euros (without partying too much themselves). The ambassadors are imported to Mykonos, where they meet each other (and Lohan) for the first time; are put to work; and are all parked together in a villa—drama satisfyingly ensues.
