Lindsay Lohan‘s latest film Irish Wish has been savaged by film critics, with one branding it an ‘AI-generated harbinger of doom’.

The Netflix movie, released on March 15, received a dismal 34% movie score via Rotten Tomatoes.

‘There are no leprechauns in this abysmal romantic comedy,’ wrote The Guardian’s Wendy Ide. ‘Otherwise, though, pretty much no theme-park Ireland cliche is left unturned’

The Janeen Damian-directed project features Lindsay as Maddie, a book editor whose world crumbles when her secret crush gets engaged to her closest friend. After reluctantly accepting the role of bridesmaid for the wedding in Ireland, Maddie soon realizes her heart’s true desire lies elsewhere.

‘As a fairy-tale romantic rendering of Ireland, Irish Wish is almost offensively bad,’ John Nugent of Empire said of the film.

Variety’s Owen Gleiberman quipped, ‘The movie is as frothy as the foam on a pint of Guinness, as formulaic as the last disposable Netflix rom-com.’

Rachel Handler of Vulture didn’t hold back either, calling it a ‘crypto-fascict, AI-generated harbinger of doom’ that ‘could have only been written by a malevolently programmed artificial intelligence.’

‘There’s so little feeling in Irish Wish,’ said Kimber Myers of Crooked Marquee.

‘I’ve cared more about (and cried more during) actual greeting card commercials than anything in this film.’

Johnny Oleksinski of The New York Post wrote, ‘This high-fructose-corn-syrup movie remains air-headed, that’s for sure, but it’s far less campy and therefore a drag.’

Despite the negative reviews, Lindsay received praise for her performance.

‘[Lohan] is an undeniable star and has always succeeded as a screwball comedienne,’ said Marya E. Gates with RogerEbert.com.

Oleksinski added, ‘Lohan is her usually charming self throughout, wasted once again in a cardboard streaming project.’

Lohan, who welcomed son Luai with husband Bader Shammas in July 2023, also served as a producer on the film.

‘She’s very involved with structuring the image for the film,’ Netflix’s director of original film Christina Rogers told Bustle.

‘She meets with our directors and helps make that decision; she has a lot of input in her wardrobe and how she presents [the film] on social media.’

The Mean Girls actress also discussed her professional journey, hinting at a potential interest in directing.

‘I feel sometimes I’m directing my directors, and I don’t know if they like it or not.’

She’s also eyeing a big biopic of another famous red-headed actress.

‘I really want to play Ann-Margret, and we’re trying to find a writer for that story,’ she told Bustle.

‘She’s a triple threat, and she’s an amazing woman on top of that. So I just really want to do her justice and help tell a great story for her.’

Irish Wish is now streaming on Netflix.
