Olivia Rodrigo pays tribute to Carly Simon with ‘You’re So Vain’

Olivia Rodrigo strives to honor the musicians who paved her way. The 19-year-old pop phenomenon helped induct Alanis Morissette into the Canadian Songwriters Hall Of Fame in September, and Rodrigo showed up at Madison Square Garden in August to perform with Billy Joel. The streak continued on Saturday (November 5) at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles for the 2022 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony.

The Class of 2022 in the Performers category was filled by Carly Simon, Dolly Parton, Duran Duran, Eminem, Eurythmics, Lionel Richie and Pat Benatar. Simon didn’t attend the ceremony – two of her sisters tragically died one day from cancer in late October – so Sara Bareilles was on hand to accept Simon’s introduction on her behalf and perform Nobody Does It Better. Rodrigo doubled the Simon celebration by taking the stage to give an absolutely perfect rendition of “You’re So Vain”.

Another fan captured part of Simon’s introductory video, in which Taylor Swift gushed about Simon’s songwriting. “When I heard ‘That’s So Vain’ I just thought, this is the best song ever written,” he said midnight said mastermind. “It’s the most direct way anyone has ever addressed a breakup. It is wonderful.”

“You’re So Vain” and “Nobody Does It Better” climbed to #1 and #2 respectively billboard‘s Hot 100 – the highest-charting singles of her illustrious career. As noted by Rolling StoneRodrigo and Simon won Best New Artist at the Grammys exactly 50 years apart – Simon earned it in 1972 and Rodrigo this April.
