TACKY TIME From Katy Perry’s g-string to Kristen’s armpit-high bodysuit, the celebs opting for trashy over classy on the red carpet

AS Hollywood stars get spruced up for the Oscars, the fashion world is begging, ‘please, please, please show us some class’.

To date, this year has been a lesson in what NOT to wear on the red carpet – with the majority of stars opting for trashy over classy.

There was a time when the most tacky outfits you would lay eyes on at star-studded events were on z-list reality stars.

But now it seems that every week yet another A-lister is dressing in next to nothing and baring the majority of her boobs or bottom.

Take Katy Perry, one of the most successful female musicians on the planet.

She arrived at The Billboard Women in Music this week in a red satin corseted co-ord – with the corseting running down her backside and showing off her cheeks, g-string and lower back tattoo, often referred to as a ‘tramp stamp’.

Elsewhere, actress 33-year-old Kirsten Stewart attended the premiere of her latest film Love Lies Bleeding in Beverly Hills this week wearing a black bodysuit that was cut from her crotch to her armpits with a pair of sheer tights underneath that served no purpose.

Now, I’m all for wearing what you want but what ever happened to looking nice?

There used to be a time when Kim Kardashian was the benchmark for all things…well, tacky.

Think latex, cut-outs and nude body-stockings, but her wardrobe is practically demure compared to some of the clobber celebs are wearing today.

They’re making her look like a nun.

At The Brits Irish singer CMAT, 28, wore a back plunge dress that revealed half her bottom.

She said on Woman’s Hour afterwards that the amount of bum-cleavage she exposed was the same amount that is deemed acceptable for bust-cleavage.

However, flashing cleavage is a little different to revealing your rear end.

Other A-listers like Kate Beckinsale have poured themselves into sheer dresses that squash their breasts and make them look like they’re ready to pop.

Why do that, Kate?

If at 50 I had a phenomenal body like yours, there’s no way in hell I’d pinch it into a polyester, condom-like dress.

Let your body breathe and look amazing.

And Emily Ratajkowski, 32, a woman so beautiful it’s like she’s not real and carved from marble, she would look good in a bin bag.

And to be honest, that would be a better outfit choice than some of the frocks she chooses.

Zendaya’s C3-PO dress is far from the wildest red carpet costume as these daring outfits from J-Lo, RIhanna and Angelina Jolie prove

And look, I’m not saying don’t wear cut-outs or go braless – by all means, if you’ve got it flaunt it.

But I’m not buying that the likes of Katy Perry stood in front of a mirror before she left the house and thought ‘Yeah… Look at my squashed bum, and thong, and tramp stamp. I look really good in this’.

Perry has had some amazing red carpet moments and is famous enough that she doesn’t need to pull attention grabbing stunts like this.

Because surely that’s the only reason she did it, right?

Another starlet, Sydney Sweeney, regarded as one of the most attractive women in the world left it necessary to don a pair of sparkly knickers and little else.

The 26-year-old Euphoria and White Lotus actress has an air about her reminiscent of old-school Hollywood icons like Jayne Mansfield and Marylin Monroe with her hourglass figure and blonde bombshell hair.

Those two women, who are still pin-up icons 50 years on from their heyday, had class and sex appeal but didn’t walk around in their pants.

The allure and art of looking a knock-out without the need to shock is very achievable as the likes of Maya Jama and Kate Middleton show.

Kim Kardashian was the benchmark for all things…well, tacky.

Take Maya, for the Love Island final she wore a long sleeved, high neck black dress with a huge cut-out at the back.

Only a thin strip of the fabric from the bottom of her back to the top of her neck held the dress together and she looked amazing.

It’s about balance.

I’m no prude and I’m not a huge believer in the legs or bust rule but there is a fine line between looking glamorous and scandalous.

If you’re a celeb with an army of people who can help you and brands falling over themselves to dress you – you have no excuse not to look the part.

Those of us who have just Primark, H&M and the good old high street at our disposal still manage it, so why can’t you?

Let’s pray that come tomorrow morning we’re greeted with fabulously sophisticated gowns worthy of Hollywood and show-stopping for all the right reasons.
